How to email that you are sick

If you are not feeling well, and need to call in sick to work; sending an Email is the best way to ensure your message reaches everyone on your team, if there are no other gargets of yours who stand to avail from having you at home. This way your manager, and the people you work with will know that you are on leave, and this allows for a bit of professionalism even when caught off guard.

Keep it simple

With your manager, you are going to be seeing the subject line right away so try to keep it as simple as possible. A good subject line is the first way to get your email noticed in a supervisor’s crowded inbox and notifies the recipient of the purpose behind it.

If you are unwell and need to call in sick then be straight-up about it from the get go. If you are direct it can reduce the possibility of confusion or miscommunication.

If your absence is going to be for more than one day, include how long you think you will be away. This can help your team plan and prepare for any changes needed in tasks.

You may well be too ill to work but if you are capable then ask colleagues if you can assist remotely or give details on how tasks can be completed in your absence.

Example: “I have finished all but x item on my schedule for the day, otherwise then please email me if you need me. I will do my best to answer when I am able.

If you are out more than a day, so workplaces will have requirements for a doctors note. If that is true with you, let them know that you will send the necessary documentation.

An example is “I will provide doctor’s note if needed and update you on my recovery.

Conclude your email by being polite again, Add wishes for your team and Thx a lot of for understanding manager.

Just to let you know that I am unwell and will not be coming to work today. I will let you know later if I need to extend, but be sure I come back early tomorrow!

What not to say in your sick day email

You should send your email as quickly as you are aware that, you will not be able to work. Sending it a day or early in the morning is most effective. This helps your manager and team to adjust the work loads and schedules for that day.

You might be too ill in some cases to even draft an email. Do so, and if necessary, ask a reliable co-worker or relative to pass on the news for you. You can send a brief notification later (text/call) to your boss that you will be sending an email pertaining the same issue for follow up.

On your return to work, either follow up with an email or talk to your manager in person just to give them an update on how the illness is going and thank them for letting you take leave. This is respectful and professional.

Use these guidelines to give your sick day email the all-business professional, respectful yet –time permitting — just a li’le but of yourself letter it needs. And its what won’t happen if you don’t show up to work and turn on your email autoresponder, but it would really be nice and not all that difficult for everyone if you did.
